Harlequins Tackling Maths (Year 4) Sessions 2-5

In session 2, Miley from Harlequins taught Year 4 about polygons. He showed us examples of polygons such as triangles, parallelograms, squares, rectangles etc. We also learned about different types of triangles, such as: equivalent, isosceles, right-angled and scalene.

On the same day, we went outside with Laura and made a stadium using rugby equipment like rugby balls, bibs, cones and tag rugby strips. It took us a bit of time, but we eventually finished it! By Mohammed 4H

Session 3 – Wednesday 22nd November

In Session 3 with Harlequins, during our outside lesson, we played twin, chicken, hero again. It was really fun. In twin, chicken, hero, there are catchers who have to pick 1 person. That person can choose ‘twin’ and pick a person to run to the other side with them. If either one gets caught, then they both have to be catchers. If the person chooses ‘chicken’, everyone has to run. Whoever gets caught is then a catcher. If the person picks ‘hero’, they have to cross alone. We also played a shape game. If Laura called a shape with 4 sides, for example, we had to get into groups of 4.

In our inside lesson, we had to do graphs. Our first graph/chart was a tally chart. Our second graph was a bar graph, and our third graph was a pictogram. By Gurbani 4H

Session 4 – Wednesday 29th November

Today, our class was ‘Tackling Numbers’ again with the Harlequins. First, we went out to play. We played three main games, each teaching us a very important skill.

These games were:
These activities help us in P.E. We learned one type of key pass: pocket to rocket.

  1. Interceptors (find spaces and pass)
  2.
  3. Sharks and fishes (Attention and speed)
  4.
  5. Capture the flag (speed, teamwork and tactics)

How to do it in 2 easy steps:
After this, we went up to class. We got changed and then we did Maths with Miley. We learned about the Metric and Imperial systems of measurement. The metric system is repetitive, like mm, cm, km. The Imperial system does not have any similar patterns and is much harder to figure out! It uses things like miles, inches, feet and yards.

  1. Wrap your hands around the ball on the long side of the rugby ball.
  2.
  3. Bring your arms forward and let go!

We really enjoyed it! By Shubhay 4H

Session 5 – Wednesday 6th December

When we came into school, we had to get changed straight away into our P.E. kits because we were going to have a session with the Harlequins.

When we were outside, Laura started to set the cones out ready for our first game. When that was done, Laura gave each child a number from one to four. All the people who were number one were all a group. All the people who were number two were a group, and the same for the people who were number three and number four. The game was called the interceptors. The aim of the game was that three people wear bibs and they have to stop the people with no bibs from passing the ball five complete times. If someone drops the ball, they have to start from zero. If the people with no bibs do five complete passes then the people with bibs swap their bibs with someone else.

After that, we went upstairs to get changed. Then, in maths, Miley taught us about area and perimeter. In area, you multiply the length of the shape by the width, for example if one side was 2cm and the other side was 5cm, when you times that together that’s 10 cm2. In perimeter you are supposed to add the length of all the sides together and you have your answer. By Zahirul 4H
